Mythologies of the Internet

Arvida Byström is a Swedish digital artist who has taken the internet by storm with her performance-based works, photographs and films. Her practice revolves around issues of digital culture, sexuality and gender. Casting herself in the leading role, Byström navigates some of our time’s most pressing questions: identity, self-branding, and the many mythological narratives the internet produces.

The video work The Fairy and the Three Wise Influencers is a cinematic collage about a fairy who believes in influencers in the same way a child believes in fairies. The work reflects on how the mythological stories of early cultures were always attempts to understand the world and the phenomena of nature. So how is the internet a modern mythology? And what supernatural beings might we encounter through our screens today?
