How can we create sustainable communities for art outside of established institutions? How do we go about organising collectively? And what opportunities for art and social engagement emerge when care, a focus on the local, and community become the foundation of cultural production.
In this conversation, participants from AKK's institutional network come together to discuss alternative ways of organisising, including self-organisation, and think about the future of cultural infrastructure. Drawing on experiences from artist-run organisations, social communities, and activist platforms, the discussion explores both the challenges and benefits involved in developing art projects in which residents, artists, and institutions share responsibility, decision-making, and ownership.
The conversation points toward new ways of understanding the institution - not as a building, but as a community, a method, or a relationship. At the same time, it examines how spaces for art can be created without necessarily building traditional institutions.
